President Donald Trump attacked Rep. Ilhan Omar on Thursday for having fled the Somali Civil War when she was a child. Trump stated that Omar, who is an American citizen, is “telling us how to run our country.”
“How about Omar of Minnesota?” Trump asked a rally in Moon Township, Pennsylvania. “We’re going to win the state of Minnesota because of her, they say. She’s telling us how to run our country. How did you do where you came from? How’s your country doing? She’s going to tell us — she’s telling us how to run our country.”
Omar responded on Twitter by writing: "Firstly, this is my country & I am a member of the House that impeached you. Secondly, I fled civil war when I was 8. An 8-year-old doesn’t run a country even though you run our country like one."
Trump has previously attacked Omar and other progressive politicians, telling them to "go back" to “the totally broken and crime-infested places from which they came.”
Accused of racism, Trump responded: "Those Tweets were NOT Racist. I don’t have a Racist bone in my body! The so-called vote to be taken is a Democrat con game. Republicans should not show 'weakness' and fall into their trap."
Omar condemned the tweets at the time, writing: “This is a president who has overseen the most corrupt administration in our history. To distract from that, he’s launching a blatantly racist attack on four duly elected members of the United States House of Representatives, all of whom are women of color."
“This is the agenda of white nationalists, whether it is happening in chat rooms or it’s happening on national TV. And now it’s reached the White House garden."
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi responded by writing: “When @realDonaldTrump tells four American Congresswomen to go back to their countries, he reaffirms his plan to “Make America Great Again” has always been about making America white again. Our diversity is our strength and our unity is our power."
“Rather than attack Members of Congress, he should work with us for humane immigration policy that reflects American values,” Pelosi wrote in another tweet. "Stop the raids.”
