On Monday, drag queen RuPaul made a special appearance on The Price Is Right at Night. The episode featured the creator of RuPaul’s Drag Race, and while RuPaul did not play, the show pledged to match the value of all the prizes and donate it to a charity of his choosing.
The contestants killed it, and with two of the prizes being cars, the total ended up being $97,266. RuPaul chose to donate the amount to Planned Parenthood, which had provided medical support to communities for over 100 years.
But the organization has found itself at the center of the abortion debate, despite abortions only making up around 3% of total services provided by Planned Parenthood, according to factcheck.org. Planned Parenthood also provides millions of tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, contraception services, pregnancy tests, and cancer screenings.
Planned Parenthood thanked RuPaul and the show for their fundraising efforts in a tweet, writing: "RuPaul 'coming on down' to play for Planned Parenthood on The Price Is Right is what we NEED right now! Thank you, RuPaul."
CBS originally announced RuPaul would fundraise for Planned Parenthood last week.
Given the debate around Planned Parenthood, it's unsurprising to learn that many people weren't happy about RuPaul and The Price Is Right at Night donating nearly $100,000 to the organization.
"Watching tonight’s episode giving away $97k to Planned Parenthood - you have got to be kidding me!! You’ve lost a lifelong fan," one user wrote.
Another added: "Tell me I’m wrong but The Price is Right is a disgrace. They raised $97,000+ for Planned Parenthood with their evening show tonight. How many lives will be lost because if this? They celebrate the deaths."
While another added: "Great, you gave a pile of money to baby killers. Isn't that special."
Others were more supportive of the donation, with one user writing: "Legend Ru Paul is on The Price is Right playing for matched donations to Planned Parenthood, because that's what heroes do."
"RuPaul and The Price Is Right raised over $100,000 for Planned Parenthood," another commenter added. "Fantastic."
While this user concluded: "RuPaul is the special guest on primetime Price is Right right now, playing to benefit Planned Parenthood and I forgot how great this game show is."
What do you make of the debate around the donation?
