Finding acceptance within one’s own family is still a significant challenge for many in the LGBTQ+ community. But one dad's heartwarming note to his son, Nate, shows us all how it should be done.
After overhearing Nate's conversation about coming out, the dad wrote: “Nate, I overheard your phone conversation with Mike last night about your plans to come out to me and the only thing I need you to plan is to bring home OJ and bread after class. We are out, like you now.”
That's some top-shelf fathering right there: supportive, clear, and he worked in a dad joke.
The letter continued, “I've known you were gay since you were six. I've loved you since you were born.” The note, originally shared on Reddit by user u/maximayy, concludes with a sweet mention: “P.S. Your mom and I think you and Mike make a cute couple.”
The dad’s loving words quickly went viral, touching the hearts of many who shared their own stories. Reddit user u/Chairman_Mittens commented, “I have quite a few gay friends, and all of them told me their parents already knew they were gay when they came out. Very sweet note though.”
Another user, u/Good4nowbut, praised the dad’s lighthearted tone, saying, "I love the energy of 'So I know you’re preoccupied with the coming out and all…but can you stop by the grocery store right quick?'”
